I think people should be free to choose who they want to choose for their mates, but at the same time there\u2019s no question that women\u2019s apparent preference for socially dominant men (including men with high status and high incomes) has a toxic impact on men\u2019s ability to be emotionally authentic. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">5<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Similarly, men&#8217;s disproportionate attraction to female youth has a burdensome impact on women as a whole.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Now, I want to be clear. I\u2019m not claiming that women\u2019s dating preferences are the <i>only<\/i> part of this dynamic. What we are talking about is the <i>male dominance hierarchy<\/i> which is often enforced by other men. However, women are (largely) spared having to participate in that hierarchy <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">6<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Though they are subject to others.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> and despite the reams of feminist literature out there, I\u2019ve rarely encountered one that acknowledged how key this hierarchy is to the whole patriarchal structure, and how oppressive it is to the vast majority of men who are compelled to participate in it and do not end up sitting at its apex.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a challenging topic and I\u2019d be interested to know more about where Joanna actually stands on this. I suppose, depending on your metrics, it\u2019s conceivable it could be true, but when you consider that in the US, men are overwhelmingly the main victims of genital mutilation, overwhelmingly the gender which is killed on the job, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">7<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Including the gender most murdered on the job, contrary to misleading articles you might see in places like HuffPo.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> and overwhelmingly the gender most populating the hellholes we call prisons, as well as the gender most frequently targeted for violence by both <i>men<\/i> AND <i>women,<\/i> that would have to be a supremely \u2018well-crafted\u2019 <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_6157_1('footnote_plugin_reference_6157_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">8<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Some might say \u2018morally gerrymandered.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_6157_1_8').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_6157_1_8', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> set of metrics.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Misandry doesn&#39;t oppress men or keep them down. It\u2019s infuriating (and frankly, inspired me to write this post).<\/p>\n<p>Joanna Schroeder is <i>an extremely intelligent woman<\/i> who has spent a good part of her career immersed in <i>gender issues affecting men.<\/i> How can she possibly make this absurd claim? The level of ideological bias one would have to have internalized in order to tweet this after having been exposed to the issues described by some excellent writers and many great commenters at TGMP is astounding.<\/p>\n<p>Joanna herself has even acknowledged some of these issues. I recall her rather pointedly and courageously standing by her assertion that male circumcision is a &#8220;human rights issue.&#8221; How can she then claim that misandry doesn&#8217;t oppress men?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Misandry empowers toxic masculinity by EXPECTING it. It elevates men who harm others. Joanna appears to be critiquing the male dominance hierarchy I was just talking about. My suspicion, though, is that she doesn\u2019t actually understand this, and hasn\u2019t fully thought through the implications of it.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, I <i>suspect<\/i> disagree with her use of \u201cfemininity\u201d here. I think part of the misandry of our culture is that we take much of everyone\u2019s emotionally vulnerable nature and put it under the \u201cfeminine\u201d brand instead of under the \u201chuman\u201d brand where it really belongs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Misandry&#39;s real, but it doesn&#39;t harm men most. A feminism that is willfully blind to the reality that misandry <i>oppresses men<\/i> is incapable of providing a genuine solution for those men.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The truth is, misandry is IMPOSSIBLE to unwind from patriarchy.
